Program Stypendialny im. Profesora Jerzego Limona jest skierowany do szekspirologów, teatrologów, historyków literatury i teatru, literaturoznawców oraz innych przedstawicieli nauk humanistycznych i nauk o sztuce prowadzących pracę naukową i/lub artystyczną.
Stypendium oferowane jest w formie jednorazowego stypendium pieniężnego pobytowego (3000 zł brutto) wypłacanego na okoliczność fizycznego pobytu w mieście Gdańsk i pracy nad dziełem naukowym i/lub artystycznym będącym wynikiem badań wykorzystujących zbiory Biblioteki Profesora Jerzego Limona zlokalizowanej w GdańskimT eatrze Szekspirowskim. Stypendysta otrzymuje również prawo do bezpłatnego pobytu w lokalu wskazanym przez Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski i/lub innych partnerów programu.
W 2026 r. stypendium będzie przyznane dwóm osobom jednorazowo na okres dwóch tygodni przypadających na miesiąc sierpień (między 4 a 31 sierpnia 2026): co najmniej 1 laureatowi rozpoczynającemu lub prowadzącemu pracę naukową, lub artystyczną, która skupia się na twórczości Szekspira oraz co najmniej jednemu laureatowi prowadzącemu działania naukowe lub artystyczne skupiające się na twórczości naukowej i/lub artystycznej Jerzego Limona.

Polish Shakespeare Association and Theatrum Gedanense Foundation (responsible, inter alia, for the erection of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre) have jointly initiated the Jerzy Limon Scholarship scheme. The scholarship will be granted annually to researchers and/or creatives who are willing to conduct research and/or artistic activities at Jerzy Limon Library, located on the premises of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre.
From 2026 onwards, the Scholarship will be granted to at least one individual, regardless of their nationality or career stage, on the strength of their research or artistic proposal, as well as the demonstrated usefulness of the collection to further their project goals. The collection consists of Jerzy Limon’s physical library moved to the Theatre, as well as the resources that the Polish Shakespeare Association has started allocating to the Library.

We want to speak not only about Jerzy Limon’s legacy, but also from its heart. Let us recall a passage from his essay, “Theatre: the Guardian of Our Freedom to Remember”, published in Polish in the journal Przegląd Polityczny [Political Review]. The essay is available in Polish, and Anna Kowalcze-Pawlik translated the excerpt.[1]
“We are witnesses of the ideological transformation of language that wants to seize our perception and control our understanding of the world. This new discourse is a key to the new [one, unified] memory it creates. […]
Literature has the capacity to outthink time. But in order to unravel the records of artistic vision or memory, you need to know the codes in which these records are written, to learn how to read signs, the language of art. Without them, you cannot know the past, and what follows, you cannot fathom the present. Language serves that comprehension, but it is not the kind of discourse that is subservient to the grammar of ideology. All attempts at controlling human minds start with the attack on language. Those who oppose such an onslaught on language are vilified, maimed and marginalised. Theatre has always opposed this”.
To conclude, I want to read the words of my dear friend and a Ukrainian ESRA member, Daria Moskvitina, which she sent me today from the shelled Zaporizhzhia:
I have deep gratitude for all your help and support and for standing with us in the darkest hours”.
